The Hong Kong Prize 2024

A young reporter who joined China Daily Hong Kong Edition only a year ago pocketed two prizes at this year’s Hong Kong News Awards. Xi Tianqi took first place in the Best News Writing (English) category for her report on carers struggling with the stresses of looking after elderly or sick family members at home. She also earned second runner-up in the Best News Headline.
In addition, copy editor James Cook took home the award for Best Feature Writing for his piece titled “In the Green Fast Lane”. The story looked at the city’s efforts to speed up public and private electric vehicle adoption in the region.
At the Art Prize 2024, Sameen Agha won the Grand Prize for her sculptural work A Home is a Terrible Place to Love, which was made from red marble and reveals a house dismantling itself from top to bottom. Another Hong Kong artist, Michelle Fung, walked away with the Vogue Women’s Prize for her mixed media work Red Bean Stalk. Meanwhile, Taiwanese-born Demet won the Public Vote Prize for her piece My Heart Is an Open Book.
Hong Kong’s prize money is among the highest in the world. The top three winners of the 2024 Art Prize received a total of HK$2 million ($311,000), a certificate and a trophy. The judging panel of the prize is led by former director of the British Museum, Neil MacGregor.
The prize is operated by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, and is governed by its Charter and rules. The prize operation is carried out in a fair and impartial manner, in accordance with scientific, rigorous standards and high social morality. It is managed by a secretariat, with professional staff in the fields of law, finance, auditing and public affairs.
The BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION PRIZE has been established to recognise the outstanding achievements in science and technology in Hong Kong, and to encourage scientific and technological innovation. No more than five persons can be awarded in each of the award field rewards, and no candidate team is allowed to win in any one award field reward within a five-year period. Nominees for this prize should support the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, uphold professional ethics and be capable of performing research and development in a scientific and rigorous way. The selection of awardees is done by a Review Committee and Compliance Oversight Team, supported by a Secretariat. BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYINNOVATION PRIZE is operated by the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre. The Secretariat is responsible for implementing the decisions of the Board, the Review Committee and the Compliance Oversight Team.
