When the sweltering summer heat hits, many Hongkongers take refuge in cosy cafes, cool restaurants or malls to escape it. But if you are not a fan of the indoors, why not soak up some sun and enjoy a refreshing dip at one of Hong Kong’s best pools?

Taking eight years to come to fruition, the Terry Farrell-designed Kennedy Town Swimming Complex opened along Victoria Harbour in February this year. The spaceship-type building features a main pool, leisure pool and a children’s pool as well as hot and cold plunge pools, and boasts an impressive view of the cityscape.

As a popular destination for mainland swimmers, this luxurious waterfront hotel’s outdoor pool is worth a visit. It offers spectacular views of the sea and Victoria Peak, as well as comfortable reclining loungers and cocktail service by the poolside. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a long day of exploring.

This hotel has the longest outdoor pool in Hong Kong and is a favourite among swimmers and sunbathers. You can enjoy the scenery while sipping on a drink or savouring a bite to eat from the adjacent restaurant and bar. The pool is a little on the pricy side, but the views and location alone are worth the price of entry.

Although the coronavirus pandemic has ended, some public pools are still struggling to hire enough seasonal lifeguards to keep them open this summer. The shortage has prompted some pools to restrict access or only open part of their facilities. This has affected swimming clubs, which have been told to rethink their plans for summer classes. The HK Recreation and Sports Professionals General Union warned that around 20 public pools will only partially open this month and up to 500 licensed private pools may not be able to operate as planned this summer.
