What is a Sidney Prize?
A sidney prize is an award given to people or organisations that make a difference in the lives of those around them. This can include their work in the arts or science, or their contributions to society. These prizes are decided on a national basis and presented at a ceremony each year. In the past, these awards have been awarded to groups such as the Black Lives Matter movement, which works to promote human rights, and the Sydney Opera House, which is an iconic symbol of the city.
In 2022, author Yeena Kirkbright won the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize for her piece titled ‘Camperdown Grief Junk’. She received $5000 in prize money, and two runners-up were awarded $750 each. The judges for the competition, Laura Elvery and Paige Clark, would like to thank all of the entrants for their excellent work.
The SS Sidney Essay Prize was established in 2004 by New York Times columnist David Brooks to recognise long-form essays that touch on deeper human realities. These essays must be grounded in reality and address issues that are relevant to the world we live in. The prize has been awarded to a number of outstanding writers, including Amanda Hess for her piece on online sexism and William Zinsser for his piece on student hypersensitivity.
To be eligible for the SS Sidney essay prize, applicants must be at least 18 years old and have completed their high school education. Applicants must also have a strong interest in social justice and the need to improve the lives of others. In addition, entrants must be willing to spend some time researching and writing the essay.
Students who wish to apply for the SS Sidney essay prize must submit their application form before the deadline of June 30. They must also have a letter of endorsement from an academic or professional staff member from the Faculty of Science. In addition, the applicants must be enrolled in a course that is relevant to the topic of their essay.
In 1987, the Aisling Society of Sydney provided funding to sponsor a prize in Irish-Australian history. This prize is given annually on the recommendation of the head of the Department of History to a student enrolled in senior courses in either Celtic Studies or History who writes the most impressive piece of written work in this field of study.
To be eligible for the SS Sidney Scholarship, you must have completed your Bachelor’s degree and currently be enrolled in the PhD program at the University of Sydney. You must also have completed a minimum of 36 credit points of research units and be undertaking a project that uses HUB core facilities at Westmead Hospital. The Scholarship is open to domestic and international students.
